Discussion #1: Chasing Harry Winston

Alas, Chicken Lit’ers! On with discussion #1 of Chasing Harry Winston: A Novel. This first segment covers pages 1-96, or through “if you think it’s too big, you don’t deserve it” if you happen to be listening along via audible. So let’s get started by talking about the these questions:

  • How do you like Weisberger’s writing style in this novel? If you’ve read The Devil Wears Prada, how does it compare?
  • Has Adriana found a future husband match in movie director Tobias Baron? And could she possibly be serious about marrying Gilles if she doesn’t find the right man within a year?
  • Does Emmy seem capable of pulling off the Tour de Whore ’07? Could she have sent her first European fling candidate, Paul Wyckoff, running away any faster with that so-called subtle inquiry about his feelings about having children?
  • Will accepting Russell’s ginormous engagement ring have an affect on Leigh’s cold exterior? Or was it the mistake of a lifetime? And what about her big break as Jesse Chapman’s ‘Zero bullshit tolerance’ editor – will she finally stop selling herself short and step up to the challenge?
  • As always, any/all questions are welcome. We want to know what you have to say!

I liked listening to this book, alot. But I did not read TDWP, I saw the movie, so I have nothing to compare it to. But like it just the same. Fast paced, and lots of good female characters. Good drama, good laughs. Adriana needs to grow up.

    # Has Adriana found a future husband match in movie director Tobias Baron? And could she possibly be serious about marrying Gilles if she doesn’t find the right man within a year?

I can’t comment, because I finished the book, but I had a preconceived notion about her from the start. That is all that I am going to say about that!

    # Does Emmy seem capable of pulling off the Tour de Whore ‘07? Could she have sent her first European fling candidate, Paul Wyckoff, running away any faster with that so-called subtle inquiry about his feelings about having children?

No. Not her character at all. I think that she said what she did to feel like she was able to fit in with Adriana, but that really is not who she is at her moral center.

    # Will accepting Russell’s ginormous engagement ring have an affect on Leigh’s cold exterior? Or was it the mistake of a lifetime? And what about her big break as Jesse Chapman’s ‘Zero bullshit tolerance’ editor – will she finally stop selling herself short and step up to the challenge?

Mistake of a lifetime. Big, even bigger than the size of the ring. A man like that would smother me! I think that she will grow a backbone, eventually. We all do.

  2. Great answers, Becca! I’ll be posting mine after the daily Energizer-Bunny-Run. Still catching up here after the big visit to the southwest. I see a small glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel…

  3. * How do you like Weisberger’s writing style in this novel? If you’ve read The Devil Wears Prada, how does it compare?
Weisberger was one of the first authors who captured my interest in ‘Chick Lit’-style novels. So far, this one is almost as good as ‘Prada’, but much MUCH better than her previous Everyone Worth Knowing book – a huge disappointment to me. I also watched the ‘Prada’ movie and found that it didn’t quite stack up to the book – her writing was just that good in the original novel.

    * Has Adriana found a future husband match in movie director Tobias Baron? And could she possibly be serious about marrying Gilles if she doesn’t find the right man within a year?
Adriana is so flighty that I absolutely cannot see her getting serious with anyone, Baron and Gilles included.

    * Does Emmy seem capable of pulling off the Tour de Whore ‘07? Could she have sent her first European fling candidate, Paul Wyckoff, running away any faster with that so-called subtle inquiry about his feelings about having children?
I, too, think Emmy was just going for the WOW factor when making the promiscuity vow. She’s obviously the needy type who can’t let go of the long-term-romantic-relationship dream. My guess is that she can’t even pull off a single one-nighter without falling head over heels for the guy. Maybe she’ll stumble on a keeper and ditch the whole Tour plan. That sounds much more interesting!

    * Will accepting Russell’s ginormous engagement ring have an affect on Leigh’s cold exterior? Or was it the mistake of a lifetime? And what about her big break as Jesse Chapman’s ‘Zero bullshit tolerance’ editor – will she finally stop selling herself short and step up to the challenge?
I have a feeling that meeting the right guy will soften Leigh up, and Russell isn’t the one to do the job. Now I’m wondering if Jesse will have something to do with helping Leigh find her true self? Must read on and find out!

All that I am saying is that there is one very spoiled Adriana, but I can say that, because who at 30 would be living in her momma and daddy’s apartment and acting like a teenager? 😉

I haven’t read anything by her before but I like her writing style. Very easy to read.

    # Has Adriana found a future husband match in movie director Tobias Baron? And could she possibly be serious about marrying Gilles if she doesn’t find the right man within a year?
Oh goodness… I don’t know about Tobias yet. As for Gilles, I seriously doubt it. It’s going to take a whole lot of a MAN to settle her down. I just don’t see Gilles as that.

    # Does Emmy seem capable of pulling off the Tour de Whore ‘07? Could she have sent her first European fling candidate, Paul Wyckoff, running away any faster with that so-called subtle inquiry about his feelings about having children?

Um. In a word… nope. I just don’t see it at all… she NEEDS too much to be able to just run from guy to guy for sex. The children comment cracked me up…. I can’t think of anything that will send a man running faster! lol

I think it was a HUGE mistake. Coming from someone who once thought that one person could love enough to keep a marriage going (to later find out that is a RIDICULOUS notion) – I see her in a real mess unless she makes some serious changes in her heart/mind. He may be a nice guy and all… but to agree to marry someone when you are already bored and tired of them – what happens later when the newness wears off? I see trouble.
I think meeting the challenge as an editor with a zero bullchit tolerance is absolutely do-able, if she will leave her comfort zone and DO IT. Maybe that is exactly what she needs to find stable ground for herself. Maybe a man that requires that out of her is what she needs too. Hmmm. So interesting, huh?
