Discussion #1: Love the One You’re With

Here it is, fellow readers – our first discussion of Love the One You’re With covering chapters 1 through 11. Are you ready to talk? If so, let’s get started with a few starter questions:

  • Have you read any other books by Emily Giffin? If so, how does this one compare so far?
  • What are your thoughts about the chance meeting between Ellen and Leo?
  • Do you think Ellen is getting into Malarkey by involving herself with the Drake Watters shoot?
  • Does it seem like Ellen & Andy’s relationship is strong enough to withstand a so-called friendship with Leo?
  • What could possibly be behind Ellen’s mixed emotions?

Feel free to post questions and/or thoughts outside of these – we’re always open here. And now let’s try something new by taking this poll:

Now why don’t you make it so that you can vote for more than one person? Hmmm…

    * Have you read any other books by Emily Giffin? If so, how does this one compare so far?

Well, duh, you know that we have. 😉 I am listening, rather than reading the book, and I like her just as much as the others that I have read of hers. I love the flow of the book so far.

    * What are your thoughts about the chance meeting between Ellen and Leo?

I think that she could have/should have said no. Exes are exes for a reason. I think that she is playing with fire meeting with him behind her husband’s back. Bad move on her part.

    * Do you think Ellen is getting into Malarkey by involving herself with the Drake Watters shoot?

Yes. I think that she knew that Leo was still involved and she wants to test the boundaries. Is she wondering what if? Is she playing with fire? Is she rubbing her marriage in Leo’s face, her new found, supposed, imagined sense of power that she thinks that she has over this ex? Play with fire, so to be burned.

    * Does it seem like Ellen & Andy’s relationship is strong enough to withstand a so-called friendship with Leo?

If she isn’t honest, who knows? I think that Andy is in it for the long haul, but I wonder about Ellen, she seems to want the best of both men. Not the reality of the life that she already has. She has a very good life with a man that loves her and a great in law family, and she is playing relationship roulette.

    * What could possibly be behind Ellen’s mixed emotions?

A case of Rose colored glasses? Replaying her youth? Wondering if she has to do everything, in case she dies young like her own mother? Didn’t she die young? Not have a chance to live a full life?

  2. I’ll change it so you can vote for more than one person. Completely necessary in this case.

    * Yes, and this one is almost as good. I can’t say for sure just yet, but will after finishing the book.

    * Way too coincidental. I think Leo has been doing some private investigating of his own on Ellen, and that he has his sights set out for her again. Not sure why, but I smell a rat.

    * Absolutely! She’s got her head in the sand by not owning up to the fact that Leo is 100% behind this opportunity. This could come back to bite her in a really bad way.

    * I sense someone is going to get burned… or maybe more than one person will. Ellen should’ve turned the other cheek at first sight of Leo. He broke her heart, and now she has the potential of breaking Andy’s. Not good at all.

    * I think she never really got over Leo and is welcoming the possibility of rekindling the lost relationship, however unfortunate for faithful Andy at home. I’m almost afraid to watch!

  3. Dory says:

    * Have you read any other books by Emily Giffin? If so, how does this one compare so far?
I’ve read both Something Borrowed & Something Blue. I like her writing style, very easy to read and makes the characters seem so ordinary – easy to identify with in many ways.

    * What are your thoughts about the chance meeting between Ellen and Leo?
Fate? The crazy way the world works sometimes? I think it happens far more then we realize.

    * Do you think Ellen is getting into Malarkey by involving herself with the Drake Watters shoot?
Absolutely. But…. do I think she will do it anyway? You betcha.

    * Does it seem like Ellen & Andy’s relationship is strong enough to withstand a so-called friendship with Leo?
Maybe. I think time will tell…

    * What could possibly be behind Ellen’s mixed emotions?
Nostalgia? Still needing a sense of *closure*, would be my guess.
