Discussion #1: Meet Me in Venice

We made it through chapter 24, so how about if we get started on our discussion of book #16, Meet Me in Venice? Wow – was it just me, or is this novel really zipping by? I almost have to stop and catch my breath! Meanwhile, here are a few questions to get the ball rolling:

  • Since this author, Elizabeth Adler, has a whole new writing style for us to read, what’s your overall feel so far? Like it? Dislike it? Not quite sure?
  • What are your thoughts on Ana Yuan’s tragic death in Suzhou?
  • How do you feel about the other characters: Lily Song? Precious Rafferty? Mary Lou Chen? Bennett Yuan/James?
  • What about the ‘madman’ driver situation with Aunt Grizelda? Who do you think wants her dead, and why?

This discussion has a mixed bag of chit-chat starters, but as always, pick and choose whatever you’d like to talk about that doesn’t involve spoilers. Shall we get started?

I like the style of writing, well for me, listening, to this book. It seems to go at a faster pace than some of the other books that we have read. I like that this is not our typical chick lit book.

    * What are your thoughts on Ana Yuan’s tragic death in Suzhou?

It was an odd way to start the book, and not having the book right in front of me, I did not know the time frame in which she died, until the story moved forward a little bit more. I wonder if her parents were connected to her murder?

    * How do you feel about the other characters: Lily Song? Precious Rafferty? Mary Lou Chen? Bennett Yuan/James?

What a cast of characters. Each bring a lot to the book. I think each has their own secrets to keep, good or bad. And it is going to get interesting as we go further in the book as to who’s is what, if that makes sense. But I think a lot will come back to the parents. I wonder if no bad deed, if I am right, goes unpunished?

    * What about the ‘madman’ driver situation with Aunt Grizelda? Who do you think wants her dead, and why?

I think that someone thinks that she stands between Preshi and the wealth and get the old woman out of the way, and one less obstacle?

I’m reminded of The DaVinci Code in the fast pace-ness, which I absolutely loved in reading Dan Brown’s style. Also, the non-chicklit-ness is a nice change, as well.

    * What are your thoughts on Ana Yuan’s tragic death in Suzhou?

It left me questioning the ‘friend’ who brought the necklace to Lily. Is it authentic? Or did someone kill Ana and is doing a switcheroo here? Questions.

    * How do you feel about the other characters: Lily Song? Precious Rafferty? Mary Lou Chen? Bennett Yuan/James?

Your comment is right on, Becca. These people have hidden agendas of their own. We’ll see how it plays out.

    * What about the ‘madman’ driver situation with Aunt Grizelda? Who do you think wants her dead, and why?

I don’t think it could be Bennett, since he stands to gain by marrying Precious. So it must be someone who is interested in taking Grizelda out of the picture before the marriage ever happens, but who? Just my thought!
